We grind them below ground level, typically 6 to 12 inches, and leave you with grindings you can use or have hauled away.

We also grind surface roots that have lifted patios and walkways.

Grinding at the same visit as a removal is meaningfully cheaper than bringing the machine back later, so it is worth deciding before the removal rather than after.

How the job runs

Access check first — the grinder has to physically reach the stump, which rules out some fenced or terraced spots.
Utilities get located before any grinding. Grinding into a buried line is the main risk in this job.
Rocks and debris around the stump are cleared, because they destroy grinder teeth.
The stump is ground to depth, with surface roots followed out where they are causing problems.
Grindings are raked out, left as fill, or hauled off, and the hole backfilled and seeded if you want it.

What drives the price

We quote on site, in writing, after walking the work with you. These are the variables that move the number:

Stump diameter measured at grade, which is the main driver
How many — mobilising for several at once is much cheaper per stump
Access for the machine, including gate widths and slope
Rock content in the soil, which is a real factor on Wasatch Back lots
Whether grindings are hauled away and the hole backfilled

On a Wasatch Back property

Rocky soil is the local variable. A lot of ground here has cobble right at the stump, which slows grinding and wears teeth, and it is the most common reason a stump costs more than its diameter suggests. The other local note is timing: grinding needs workable ground, so the practical window closes with the first hard freeze and reopens after spring thaw. If a removal happens in late autumn, decide about the stump then rather than assuming it can be handled in January.

Why is my stump more expensive than a bigger one I was quoted elsewhere?: Usually rock, access, or both. A 20-inch stump on open ground is straightforward; the same stump behind a gate in cobbly soil is a genuinely different job and costs more despite being the same diameter.
Can you grind a stump in winter?: Only while the ground is still workable. Once it freezes hard the machine cannot cut properly, so a late-autumn removal should settle the stump question at the same time rather than deferring it to spring.
